UK 2021 Edition

I recently met a group of students of the University of Oxford. Jonathon Lee, https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonleept/, a brilliant Physical Therapist currently doing his MBA there, gathered a group of friends and we spoke essentially about how much they can learn and contribute while they do an Internship at a company. While preparing and thinking about it, I went through different websites and Top X lists searching for “great places” in the UK. Which was, is, and will always be a top innovation hotspot so there are many companies to look at. At the end, I settled in those below, my personal Top 30 UK Organisations to make an Internship in the UK these days. Startups, Academic Institutes, Established companies. Biotech, Fintech, DeepTech, Digital Health, you name it. Places that are writing History, like DeepMind, who recently were able to predict protein structures with accuracies never seen before using their software AlphaFold. The Labs from Sarah Gilbert, creator of the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine. Sarah, a real Hero of our challenging times. Raspberry Pi, a fantastic do-it-all minimalistic single board computer. How many have I bought over the years? Arm, that semiconductor maker that powers today’s mobile devices. If you participate in Hackathons, you have been at Hopin’s events platform already. Orchard Therapeutics, focused on gene therapies with Stem cells to treat once and for all rare diseases. Oxford Nanopore, I was so excited when I learned about them years ago, with their portable device to sequence genetic material. BrewDog, a Brewery, and owner of one of the pubs in Berlin that I will visit immediately after C19 measures permit. So many great experiences there. If you have 3 months, 1 month, 1 week time to invest, apply for an internship, go to one of these companies, learn and absorb as much as you can from them. I think you won’t regret. I believe you will have the unique chance to experience first hand the future of Business, Science, and Technology.
